PEOPLE
- As in the fairytale of Peter Pan, Alessio, Santi and Francesca
Planeta — at the helm since 1995 — believed in Neverland. Now that, with
curiosity and perseverance, they've come through the test with flying
colors, they've gone back to their origins — as in Barrie's story. And
thanks to their unceasing discovery of the authenticity of the island's
single terroirs, Sicily has become Everland!
VINEYARDS - Starting
out from Sambuca, 93 hectares of vineyard on the shores of Lake Lago
Arancio, in 1985 Planeta began to systematically buy other important
properties: Menfi (161 hectares), Vittoria (34 hectares), Noto (51
hectares), Castiglione di Sicilia sull'Etna (16 hectares) and Capo
Milazzo. The aim has been to raise the profile of the terroir and
promote native grapes, especially the most unknown and unusual.
WINES
- The range of wines tasted was very good indeed. Here are our
impressions from east to west. The engrossing varietal Noto Nero d'Avola
Santa Cecilia 2009 (• 50,000 bt) pleasantly expresses the richness and
marine essence of the terroir. Elegance and flavor sum up the identity
of Passito di Noto 2010 {O 24,000 bt). Fourteen months on yeasts have
added richness, consistency and minerality to Metodo Classico Brut 2010
(O carricante; 10,000 bt), a label made with grapes grown on Etna,
Cerasuolo di Vittoria Cl. Dorilli 2010 (• 12.000 bt) is mild, notably
expressive and drinkable — for us it's a Great Wine. Alastro 2011 (O
grecanico; 80.000 bt) is introvert and pleasurable, while Maroccoli 2009
(• syrah; 65,000 bt) is rich, spicy and balsamic.
